During the civil war labor was a big issue, in today’s society immigration and labor rights can go hand in hand because both are a big issue for modern US citizens here.
In the civil war slaves had lots of work but no freedom, while citizens had freedom but not much work. During the civil war many slaves were respected by early US citizens because many thought that the Africans weren’t human enough to get home rights. Like the Dred Scott case because this is a great example of how salve didn’t get fair rights. Dred Scott lived in the state of Illinois were it was a slave free state until before moving back to the slave state of Missouri. When Scott was captured he tried to tell the slave owners of Missouri that he was a free slave, but during that time no one from the south would believe him. So Scott went to supreme court to fight for his right but, even farmers who were part of the Constitution said," blacks had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit. He was bought and sold and treated as an ordinary article of merchandise and traffic, whenever profit could be made by it." That was one case which show the rights that slaves never had. Many plantation owners even give many salves a rough life because with no rights their was no freedom. Slaves even worked free while many owners reaped the benefits of having a money making plantation. Many salves didn’t have health care, much food to eat and barley a place to sleep. “Plantation masters argued callously that it was "cheaper to buy than to breed"--it was cheaper to work the slaves to death and then buy new ones than it was to allow them to live long enough and under sufficiently healthy conditions that they could bear children to increase their numbers.”
Today in modern day America many citizens are having no work because many illegal immigrants are taking the jobs of citizens. During the civil war many US citizens didn’t care who was working as long as the job got done, but many US citizens are saying that many of our jobs are getting taken by immigrants. “Immigrants surged into the United States to fill many of the new jobs. Many workers protested angrily, fearing that competition with new workers would undermine their wage gains. The performance of foreign-born regiments in combat and the presence of immigrants in labor organizations often helped to defuse the tension, however. Black workers were not so fortunate. Most white workers simply refused to accept African-Americans in the workplace, and some employers exacerbated difficult race relations by using blacks as strikebreakers.” To stop the complaining of many US citizens an origination known as NAFTA has found a way to solve this problem labor laws and immigration labor laws. NAFTA’s plan is to make a living standard of making U.S., Mexico and Canada into a new market for U.S. exports and turning these countries from poor to money making. This is even a good way countries can make good trades for supplies. This can even give more jobs to those who need them in there own country.
